Today we’re going to discuss bonnell springs. What are they? And what are the benefits of having a mattress that incorporates them?

We’ll also do some comparisons. For example Bonnell springs vs pocket springs. and Bonnell springs vs foam mattress. In the end there will be some good examples of mattresses that use them.

What are Bonnell springs?

Bonnell springs are the most commonly used springs in most entry-level mattresses. They’re the most traditional and have an hourglass shape. So they’re wider at the bottom and top – at their smallest in the middle. The connection is made with metal to create the spring.

It was very popular in the previous century, but now most mattress manufacturers have switched to making mattresses with either foam or different types of springs.

The springs work well for providing support, but the system is a bit outdated. And some people might experience discomfort and pain when sleeping for a long period of time on Bonnell springs.

Thel springs are manufactured by heating steel and bending it into the correct shape. After that, multiple springs are connected to create the entire Bonnell spring. This is than wrapped in the bedding, and there you’ve got the spring mattress.

It’s mostly used to make the lower layers of the mattress, since it’s not too comfortable on its own. However, it makes for a solid base if you then top the springs with foam, cotton or wool for more comfort.

There are several Bonnell spring mattress benefits. Here’s a list:

  • Durability – The springs are made from durable materials and will therefore last a long time.

Bonnell springs vs pocket springs

Many springs might look the same, but there are differences between Bonnell springs vs pocket springs. Here are the main ones:

  • Independent – pocket springs are independent, and therefore they offer extra contour and pressure relief if you sleep on a mattress that has those.
  • Comfort – as a results, pocket springs are considered more comfortable by the majority of the population.
  • Softness – pocket springs are cooler than Bonnell. So if this is a problem for you during hot summer nights, it’s better to go with pocket.

So in general, even though there aren’t too many differences between Bonnell springs vs pocket springs, if you’ve got the choice. We recommend to take a mattress with pocket springs. They tend to be more comfortable and better quality.

Bonnell spring vs foam mattress

Another  interesting question is Bonnell spring vs foam mattress. Now, as you might have expected, this comparison is kind of the same as the previous one. However, there is one extra thing. Many mattresses are made with coils as the supporting later, with foam on top for extra comfort and support.

But in general, if you’re deciding between a Bonnell spring vs foam mattress, for overall quality we recommend you get a foam mattress.

You can also choose to get a bone out spring mattress with a form upper layer. This will be good for support, but also comfort.

If money is an issue, then it’s probably better to pick a mattress that’s completely made with springs. However, the comfort may suffer a bit if you do this.
