Alright, let’s get started. Which of these 2 chemicals works better for introducing sleep? Here’s a spoiler. They both work. Many people all over the world use melatonin or diphenhydramine to fall asleep at night and get restful sleep. That can be for a variety of reasons:

Some may not be able to fall asleep naturally. Others might use them to stay asleep. And some might just enjoy how they wake up refreshed after a good night of sleep. So it’s not a matter of what works and what doesn’t – but more a matter of preferences (and in some way – risk that you’re willing to take).

Chemistry of melatonin vs diphenhydramine

We’ll start with the chemistry of these 2 chemicals. Why is this important? Because melatonin (C13H16N2O2) is actually a hormone that is naturally produced in the body. But diphenhydramine (C17H21NO) on the other hand is an antihistamine. It was discovered in 1943 and is a substance that is unnatural to the body.

Now, with melatonin the risks have been mapped long ago. There are very few to none. If you take it regularly for a short period of time (3-12 months), there are virtually no side effects. Longer use, however, may cause your body to down regulate its own natural production of the hormone.

Diphenhydramine on the other hand is a drug that is being used against a wide variety of disorders (such as insomnia, anxiety, allergies, movement disorders and nausea), and can cause adverse reactions. It’s also possible to overdose on the drug, which is a magnitude easier to do with diphenhydramine vs melatonin.

It’s estimated that on average, users will fall asleep within 30 minutes of taking Benadryl.

So actually we’re comparing a natural sleeping aid versus a chemical one. And just like with most natural vs chemical conflicts, there are a couple of things you need to take into account. Let’s continue with the effectiveness of each of these sleeping aids.

Which one works better for sleep?

We found out that both melatonin and diphenhydramine work for getting better sleep. But which one works better? I’d say that diphenhydramine works better to induce sleep, and melatonin is more of a subtler help. Benadryl actually sedates you and turns off your brain, whereas melatonin will nudge your body and brain into feeling more sleepy naturally.

Put it the other way: with benadryl you will get sleepy no matter what. And it will be very difficult for you to not fall asleep. The drug basically does all the work for you.

With melatonin, you will find yourself getting more and more relaxed, which will make it easier for you to fall asleep and get a good night rest. However, if you are very anxious or stimulating yourself in another way (playing video games, watching TV, blue light from screens etc.), you might still not fall asleep.

This behaviour is not recommended, and anyone who’s fighting insomnia would do better to not watch TV or play video games before going to bed.

Which is better in the long-term?

Now that you’ve got a quick update of how melatonin vs diphenhydramine works, let’s discuss the long-term effects. After all, you’re probably not looking for a sleeping aid to take only once. If you’re suffering from insomnia, this is something you’ll want to be taking every night in order to fall asleep well and lead a normal life…

Since melatonin is the natural hormone that induces sleep, it’s safer to take it on a long-term base vs diphenhydramine (benadryl). On the other hand, the effect is more subtle, and if you’re suffering from a bad case of insomnia, benadryl might be more effective.

However, there is a higher chance of dependency in the case of benadryl vs melatonin. And if you’re the type of person who’s susceptible to that – then it might be smarter to take melatonin.

Melatonin is the better option if you’re planning to take sleeping aid for a longer period of time. Studies have shown that it is safe to take for periods from 3-12 months. However, benadryl has a stronger effect. And you might find that melatonin is too subtle for you. In that case benadryl would be better, since it works.

I recommend you to try out melatonin first, since it is the more natural option. And if it doesn’t work – then try out diphenhydramine (benadryl).

Benadryl possible side effects

As stated before, benadryl can have side effects. Whereas with melatonin, you can basically take as much as possible without adverse effects (although it might be, in reverse, less effective).

Benadryl legal status:

Benadryl is available as OTC medication. So it’s legal to have with you. Do watch out with flying though: it’s illegal in Zambia. Even the chances of you flying there aren’t too high, this is important to notice. As Americans have been detained there before for having benadryl with them.

The U.S. government deems benadryl to have limited abuse potential, limited euphoric effects, but potentially serious side effects. That’s why every product on the market that contains benadryl needs to show that clearly on the package.

The reason that I am saying this is because diphenhydramine is a more harsh drug on your body. Whereas melatonin is a regular supplement that is already available in your body.

So if you’re unsure what to take it’s a better decision to go with melatonin. After all, you do not want to be putting unnecessary stress onto your body. Even if you want to fall asleep better. Diphenhydramine will make you pass out, but it does not necessarily promote restful sleep.

Can you take both melatonin AND benadryl?

Another common question is whether you can take both melatonin and benadryl at the same time. And if this is more effective than taking either one.

Let’s get this clear from the start: it is not recommended to take both melatonin and benadryl.

The reason for this is because they both work through different mechanisms (melatonin restores your natural sleep cycle – benadryl changes it).

Another reason that they don’t combine is since they both can make you feel more drowsy, the effect can be too much. It’s very possible that you’ll experience a sort of *hangover* effect, where you’ll still be drowsy and groggy in the morning.

Millions of people all over the world suffer from insomnia and it’s becoming one of the biggest problems out there.   • Eat light at night – don’t wolf down a double cheeseburger menu with a large coke, it will take ages to digest and if you’re feeling full in bed, you’re not going to fall asleep well.
  • Avoid caffeine after 3 PM – in most people that 5PM espresso is still active when you’re in bed at 12 at night. So quit the caffeine after halfway afternoon and you’ll find that it’s easier to fall asleep.

That’s enough preaching. Feel free to incorporate these things into your life. You may find that it makes a big difference in falling asleep.

In general, if you decide to go the herbal sleep supplements route, you can experiment safely, but watch out for cheap chemical tablets. L theanine is an amino acid that you can find naturally in green tea (hence the name). People all over the world use it for its relaxing effects. it’s a subtle thing, but it works great to make you more calm and to reduce racing thoughts in your head. I take it about once a week before bed if I’ve had a stressful day. It really helps me turn my thoughts off and get ready for a good night’s sleep.

Bonus: L theanine reduces the anti-sleep effect of caffeine. So if you’ve drunk too much coffee, you can take l theanine to become calmer.

#2 Natural: melatonin

Melatonin is the natural sleep hormone that your body produces. So it only makes sense to add a little extra if you’re having trouble falling asleep. There are no side-effects, but if you take it for more than several months on end, it might compromise your own body’s capability produce melatonin a bit. So try to use it only when you need to (or stop after a month).

Bonus: melatonin will make you have wacky dreams. Depending on you, this can be either fantastic – or too overwhelming.

Benadryl (chemical name is diphenhydramine) is a OTC chemical sleeping tablet that is being used for a wide variety of ailments, such as nausea and allergies. But most people take it for insomnia. It will reduce feelings of stress and make you feel sleepy after taking it. It’s an effective supplement, but you don’t want to take it for months on end. Although it is considered to be one of the safer chemical sleeping tablets, I’d recommend this only if the previous ones didn’t work.

How to take benadryl: take 25-50 mg 1 hour before bed. Do not exceed 300 mg in 24 hours.

It all depends on what you want

In the end you are the deciding factor. If you suffer from insomnia once a while and just want something that knocks you out – benadryl would be the likely choice for you. If insomnia is a daily problem in your life, and you want a natural supplement (without side effects) that you can take for long periods on end, then I recommend either l-theanine or melatonin. Try them both and see which one you like personally.

And if you don’ really have any preferences and just want to sleep – then start with L theanine and see if its effect is strong enough for you. If it’s not, try melatonin and so on.
